There’ was an extra special celebration at Whittlesford Parish Church Thursday 14 June 2012. When there will be a Service of Thanksgiving and the ’Laying Up’ of the Standard of the former 19th Fighter Squadron at 10am – starting with a Hawk fly-past.
The No 19 Squadron are a key part of Duxford’s history having been at the airfield through the ‘30s and an important unit in the Battle of Britain. When it was known that the squadron was sadly disbanding, its Association investigated options for the eventual ‘laying up’ of the Squadron’s standard. Usually a standard is placed in a church that has special significance for the unit concerned and in this case Whittlesford was selected – given No. 19 Squadron’s long association with Duxford (and therefore Whittlesford – especially the Red Lion!), and as a number of No. 19 Squadron men are buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission graves in Whittlesford churchyard.
The service was be led by Whittlesford’s Revd Ruth Whitehead and Padre Stewart Shaw. Members of the former squadron, based at RAF Valley, Anglesey and the Squadron Association were present.
